Before confessing, it is essential to set aside a moment of retreat and prayer, placing yourself in God's presence with sincerity and humility. Confession is a sacrament of reconciliation and should be approached with a repentant heart and a willingness to seek conversion.
1. Being in God's Presence
Find a quiet place, such as a church or a reserved space in your home, to meditate on your life and recognize God's action in your journey. Make the Act of Adoration as a way to start this moment:
"Lord, I believe that You are here present, You see me and hear me. I adore You from the depths of my heart and acknowledge You as my God and Creator. Grant me the grace to examine myself with truth and sincere repentance."
2. Asking for the Holy Spirit's Guidance
Before the examination of conscience, ask God to enlighten your mind and heart to recognize your sins and seek true repentance. A helpful prayer at this time is:
"My God, enlighten me so that I may recognize my sins, truly repent, and confess them sincerely. Give me the strength to avoid evil and follow Your ways faithfully. Amen."
3. Examination of Conscience
Reflect deeply on your thoughts, words, actions, and omissions, evaluating your relationship with God, with others, and with yourself. Use the examination of conscience questionnaire to guide you through this process.
4. Prayer Before Confession
After the examination of conscience, pray asking for the grace to confess well:
"My Lady and my Mother, help me to recognize my sins, sincerely repent, and make a worthy confession. Grant me humility and courage to seek God's forgiveness and renew my life. Amen."
Now, with a repentant heart and confidence in divine mercy, you are prepared to receive the sacrament of confession.
